“It’s Men’s Turn [To Cry]“: Shakira Gets Brutally Honest About Ex Gerard Piqué.
These hips never lie. Shakira just gave a piece of candid honesty about her former relationship with football (soccer) star Gerard Piqué, expressing her resilience and path to mental healing through her new music.
On Monday (March 25), The Queen of Latin Music was invited on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote her new album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran [Women No Longer Cry].
Nevertheless, the 47-year-old songstress also got candid about her personal life, as she told Jimmy that the reason there was a seven-year gap between her new album and 2017’s El Dorado was because of her ex-spouse.
Shakira got very candid about her former relationship with Gerard Piqué, and how he made it hard for her to make new music
Shakira said: “I’ve been putting out music here and there, but I think it was really hard for me to put together a body of work.
“I didn’t have time. It was the husband factor.
“Now I’m husband-less.”
The Colombian star, who was in a relationship with the Spanish footballer for 11 years, added: “The husband was dragging me down. Now I’m free! Now I can actually work!”
She further opened up about her recovery journey: “I was trying to rebuild myself, and music was the glue, but it felt like it was an alchemical process in which I was transforming pain and anger and frustration into creativity and productivity and strength and resilience.”
Shakira went on to discuss alternate covers of her new album, which are themed around precious stones.
“The resilience of a diamond,” the singer said. “So that’s why I picked the metaphor of the precious stones because of the resilience that us women have today when we have to face adversity.”
Shakira appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote her new album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran.
As per Billboard, the Waka Waka hitmaker said she rejected the societal expectations placed on women to keep their pain secret and to conform to certain standards of healing.
Speaking of her album’s true meaning, Shakira explained: “It’s men’s turn [to cry] now.
“Now women [should] decide when to cry, how to cry, and until when.
“No one is supposed to tell us how to cope with the hardship of life.”
Shakira started dating Gerard, who is most commonly referred to by his last name “Piqué,” in 2011.
The former Futbol Club Barcelona center-back, who is exactly ten years her junior, and Shakira have two sons: Milan, born on 22 January 2013, and Sasha, born on 29 January 2015.

It wasn’t long before cheating rumors started to circulate, and a “jam drama” quickly became viral on social media.
Last year, the singer found out about Piqué’s alleged infidelity through a jar of strawberry jam, as speculated from a music video for her and Rauw Alejandro’s 2022 song, Te Felicito, The Independent reported.
In one scene of the music video, Shakira is seen looking into a refrigerator. According to ShowNews.today, Shakira was asked in an interview what she was looking for in the fridge, and she reportedly said: “To find the truth!
