Biden Orders Sanctions on 10 Countries That Kill Gay Lovers

While many countries have recognized same-sex marriage, some countries still consider homosexuality a crime, even punishable by death.
The LGBT community (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) has suffered a great loss after the shooting in Orlando, Florida, USA on June 12. The gunman carried out a bloody attack targeting the Pulse nightclub for gay men. At least 49 people were killed and 53 injured after the most horrific shooting in US history.
While in many countries, homosexual acts and homosexual sex are legal, some countries such as the US, Canada, Brazil… even recognize same-sex marriage, in some other countries, homosexuality is considered illegal. The Washington Post on June 13 listed 10 countries where homosexuality can be punished by death.

Several Western countries are protesting against moves to bar LGBT people from participating in a UN-sponsored HIV/AIDS forum, according to AP.

1. Yemen: Under a 1994 law, married men can be stoned to death for having sex with men. An unmarried man can be whipped or imprisoned for a year. Women can be sentenced to seven years in prison.

2. Iran: Under Islamic law, same-sex sex between two men can be punishable by death. Acts such as kissing can be punished by flogging. Women can also be flogged.

3. Iraq: Laws do not prohibit homosexual acts, but some people who commit them are often shot dead by gunmen or sentenced to death by judges under Islamic law.

4. Mauritania: Muslim men who have sex with men can be stoned to death under a 1984 law. Women face prison sentences.

5. Nigeria: Federal law makes same-sex sex a felony punishable by prison. In some states that use Islamic law, men who do so can be sentenced to death. In addition, in January 2016, the country passed a law banning gay men nationwide from attending gatherings or forming groups.

6. Qatar: Qatar’s Islamic law applies only to Muslims. Adultery can be punishable by death, regardless of gender.

7. Saudi Arabia: Under Islamic law, a married man who has sex with a man can be stoned to death; A non-Muslim who commits the same act with a Muslim can also be guilty of the above crime. In addition, any sexual act outside of marriage is illegal.

8. Somalia: by law homosexuality is punishable by imprisonment, but in some parts of the south, Islamic courts impose Islamic law and impose the death penalty.

9. Sudan: Anyone who commits homosexuality three times can be sentenced to death. The first and second offenses are punished by flogging and imprisonment. Some parts of southern Somalia have more lenient laws.

10. United Arab Emirates (UAE): Lawyers and experts in the country are divided over whether homosexuality should be punished by death or just rape. Amnesty International recently reported that it had not found any cases of homosexuality being punished by death in the UAE. However, all sexual activity outside marriage is prohibited.
